Styling a Basic, Black Turtleneck Four Different Ways

Styling a Basic, Black Turtleneck Four Different Ways

There are two things, and two things only, that I enjoy about Winter and that’s Christmas and the fact that it MIGHT be cold enough to wear a turtleneck. I hate the cold, so that may be a little contradicting, but turtlenecks are honestly one of my favorite types of garments. How convenient is it that you don’t have to worry about wearing a scarf because your top is already covering your neck?!

Depending where you live, a scarf, sweater, and jacket may still be necessary to layer on top of your turtleneck, but “cold enough” to wear one for me is still warm enough that I can wear it by itself. The absolutely most that I’m trying to wear is a light jacket or cardigan - if I feel like I have to do more than that then it’s too cold for me to leave the house anyway.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, the common denominator in the four looks below is the black turtleneck bodysuit. Yes, you read that right. It’s a bodysuit, so it stays smooth, and you obviously don’t have to worry about it randomly coming untucked at an inconvenient time. I purchased it from Amazon, as I do just about everything else, and since I’m an associate, I do earn from qualifying purchases that are made through the paid link above.

Starting with the most casual look, I paired my turtleneck with a pair of straight leg jeans from Target, a thrifted flannel, and white booties from Amazon (ad). No matter where you’re going, or unless it’s a formal or semi-formal event, this is the outfit that you can put on that’ll only take you 5-10 minutes to get ready. Of course you can add your own spin to it, whether its swapping out the boots with sneakers, a different style of jeans, or even a different kind of cover up.

The shoes are truly the stars of the show here. I’ve had a thing for thick platform heels for a while now, so once I had my eye on these, I waited until there was a sale, and didn’t think twice about buying them. Even though I don’t wear heels nearly as often as my style posts may make it seem, I feel like I could wear these quite a bit. For this post, I decided to pair them with some brown leather pants that I purchased from Ross and a thrifted trench coat, but I have at least four other outfits on my mind that I could potentially wear them with. This is just from what I already have in my closet … please don’t get me started with shopping.

Does this skirt look familiar to anybody?

No?

That’s fine. It was featured in my last post that went live in 2019, and man, I tell you, I loved how that look turned out so much. I don’t really consider something worn if it was only for the purpose of taking pictures, so to this day, I still haven’t worn it. I’m always trying to switch things up, so for this round of pictures, I’m wearing it with my turtleneck, a midi skirt from JCPenney, a waist belt from Shein, a Michael Kors denim jacket, and the “Dorothy” over the knee boots from Shoe Dazzle. These were purchased in 2020, but I checked anyway to see if they’re still available but they’re unfortunately not. I did see that someone had them listed on eBay, however, so if you search around you may be able to find them lightly used.

I know for a fact I’m probably going to wear this for my husband and I’s next date night. That’s almost why I chose to do another look - I was thinking too deep into posting the same outfit twice on social media, when in reality, it truly doesn’t matter. A top tier look deserves to be shown off multiple times.

Attempting to keep this story short and sweet, let me tell y’all how this look even came about. I found the dress at Ross, except in yellow, and talked myself out of buying it because I “didn’t need it.” The more I thought about it, the more I felt like I did need it, so I went to two different Ross stores that were closer to my house, and found the black dress in the second store. I was slightly disappointed because I was really looking for the yellow one, but then I thought about how bomb an all black look would be, so I was no longer disapointed.

I recently bought the tights from Showpo because they were on sale for $9, but maybe a smidge because I was channeling my inner 6th grader who had an obsession with zebra print. I figured I might as well wear these instead of my plain black tights to add some more razzle dazzle. The boots, on the other hand, were purchased from Miss Lola several years ago, like WAY back when they were still called Lola Shoetique. I was just looking around my closet and realized how much I still like them, so I told my husband I wanted to wear them somewhere. Maybe a few days later, it clicked that they would look amazing with this blazer dress. Put it all together and it’s giving everything that it’s supposed to!

The main takeaway of this post is that turtlenecks are extremely versatile, but when it comes to dresses, a turtleneck won’t always be an option. I have confidence in saying that a sleeveless blazer dress will most likely be a go, and formal dresses won’t be, but ultimately, I’d have to see exactly what the dress looked like to decide.

If you’ve been on the fence about buying a few turtlenecks for Winter, or if you’re just flat out against them, I have to know … did I convince you to buy one or are you staying on the side where the grass is less green? Let’s talk about it. I have time.
