A Guide to Styling Leather Shorts for Colder Weather

A Guide to Styling Leather Shorts for Colder Weather

Leather is very much a cold weather fabric, but obviously shorts are for the months where showing some skin is more than necessary. Mix the two together and you truly have a pair of shorts that are perfect to wear year round (for the most part). Maybe wouldn’t recommend wearing during a blizzard, but if you’re built like that, then my hat is off to you, because my ass wouldn’t even be leaving the house … let alone putting effort into my appearance.

But then again, maybe I would. Since I’m a corporate girlie working remotely now, I told myself that since my “snazzy work fit” era is over, I absolutely need to put on real clothes when I leave. If that just so happened to be during a blizzard, then catch me walking the streets in my leather shorts and thigh high boots while trying not to cry.

It’s been a while, I know, but for the OGs who remember, I like to show some variety in my posts - this time around is no different. So I put together a few looks with a pair of brown leather shorts as well as a black pair that I purchased from Amazon, and I’m sharing a few tips on how you can achieve a similar look or take the idea and make it completely your own!

Topping it off.

Wear a sweater.

That’s it.

That’s the post.

But no, for real though, a chunky sweater goes perfectly with leather shorts. Depending on how cold it is, you can add more layers underneath and not have to wear a super heavy duty jacket over it. For a more casual look, you could definitely go the denim jacket route and pair it with a flat boot. I’m certain you can hop on just about any site and find a few different denim jacket styles to choose from, but since I wanted mine to fit more oversized, I just stole the jacket that I bought for my husband a few years ago :) It was back when I worked at Michael Kors so I don’t think I paid more than 30 or $40 for it, and I wouldn’t expect for anyone to pay more than that for one, no matter where you get it from. A leather jacket, on the other hand, will probably run you at least $200. I’m a faux-everything queen so I personally paid $60 for mine - it’s literally perfect, though. Because it’s completely fur lined, it’s the jacket you can wear over a lighter sweater or either a turtleneck and easily take your leather shorts from casual to date night in the city. It’s still available at Akira, and they take Klarna, so do as you wish with that information.

As with a denim jacket, you can find a sweater or long-sleeved shirt/turtleneck at just about any clothing store this time of year. My go-to places have honestly been Amazon, Ross, Goodwill, and as of recently, Showpo. ASOS and Zara have a great selection for sure, I just don’t shop at these stores as as often. The brown printed sweater that I’m wearing is one that came from Ross and I paid around $15 for it. The colorful sweater came from Goodwill so that was probably $5. While I feel like I’ve been okay with spending more on a single item (such as the jacket) to get exactly what I want, I’m still the girl that’s always looking for a deal, so this is me reiterating that the amount that you spend isn’t what is going to make or break your look, it’s 100% how you style it.

Circling back to the turtlenecks, the white one that I’m wearing is actually a bodysuit (which I love), and it’s a great material that isn’t see-through. Get this exact one as well as see the other color offerings here.

Giving it a little SOLE.

I’m a functioning shoe addict, so through all the thoughts and emotions that I have while putting an outfit together, I’m literally the most excited about putting my shoes on. When it comes to leather shorts during the Winter, boots are the way to go. Heel or flat, ankle, below the knee, or over, you really can’t go wrong.

Why?

Because boots are going to look better than any other shoe when wearing thick tights. Not saying you can’t wear a pair of pumps, you just have to be a bit more selective than you would if wearing boots. Boots also allow for you to wear thick socks to give your feet an extra layer of warmth. That’s not a luxury you’re getting if you decide to wear pumps or another type of shoe. Personally, that’s a deal breaker because my feet are always cold, but if that’s the way you want to go then I truly hope it goes well for you.

As for where to buy yourself a pair of bomb ass boots, EGO, Simmi, and Aldo have been the main three places that I’ve shopped recently. EGO and Simmi are UK-based and only have whole sizes, so in my experience, going a half size down versus up has been a better fit. We don’t gatekeep around here, so before they’re gone, go grab you a pair of the green boots from Simmi. As of right now, they’re on sale for $22.50! I’m not even going to lie to y’all, I’m probably going to buy the other colors right now.

Both the combat boots and over the knee boots were bought a few seasons ago, so they are no longer available. However, the combat boots are from Michael Kors and the over the knee boots are Aldo.

A Few Quick Tips for the Road.

The key to wearing shorts and skirts during the colder seasons is to wear fleece lined tights. I cannot stress enough how much of a non-negotiable wardrobe staple these are, so before I continue, I’m going to need y’all to go get a few pair of those - at a minimum, brown or nude, black, and grey. I bought a two-pack from Amazon, which I’ll admit, could definitely be thicker, but I wore both pair with the green boot look in 16 degree weather and my legs weren’t cold at all.

Second thing, depending on how cold it is, you may be able to get away with not wearing tights if you’re wearing over the knee boots. The ones that I’m wearing are SNUG honey, so whether I’d be able to manage having a layer of fabric underneath is questionable. Thankfully, the day I shot this look it wasn’t too cold so the boots provided all the warmth I needed.

Last thing, which isn’t really a tip, but more so something I forgot to mention earlier, and that’s that all three of my purses are Michael Kors. It’s really a shame that I haven’t been to an MK store since I stopped working there in May 2021. I’m due for AND deserving of a new bag. A pink one at that. Based on this post, I think it’s clear that I have a favorite style.

Somebody screenshot that and send it to my husband.

See y’all next week!

DL
